UC IRVINE EXTENSION ADDS TWO NEW COURSES TO ITS “CLINICAL TRIALS: MEDICAL DEVICE AND DRUG DEVELOPMENT” PROGRAM  New Elective Courses, Clinical Trials Project Management and Fundamentals of Electronic Clinical In response to the growing and specialized needs of the largely populated Orange County biotechnology and biomedical communities, the University of California, Irvine Extension has enhanced its “Clinical Trials: Medical Device and Drug Development” Program with the addition of two new elective courses: “Clinical Trials Project Management” and “Fundamentals of Electronic Clinical Trials.”            “Professionals in the clinical trials field must continually seek new knowledge to stay abreast of technology and increased global harmonization of compliance standards,” said Rogelio C. Rodriguez, director of engineering and science programs for UC Irvine Extension. “By expanding our course offerings, we are better preparing individuals to become leaders in this field.”            Held Fridays and Saturdays August 8-23 from 8:30 to 5 p.m. at the UCI Learning Center in Orange, Calif., “Clinical Trials Project Management” will help students to organize clinical trials project teams, define specific responsibilities for each team member, and create a project plan for either U.S. or global trials. Participants will evaluate clinical and regulatory strategies for U.S. and global approvals and become familiar with common standards of operation for clinical trials. Also addressed will be the financial management of a clinical trial, negotiating contracts, and understanding how to interact with contract research organizations.            Beginning July 21, “Fundamentals of Electronic Clinical Trials” will be hosted online, offering professionals across the nation access to the courses at the convenience of busy working schedules. Designed to assist students in increasing their expertise on the application of new technologies and redesigned processes to streamline clinical trials, students will learn how to improve the efficiency of traditional clinical research cycle-paper-based processes by utilizing information technology. Participants will gain valuable knowledge of electronic processes used to plan, collect, access, exchange and achieve data required for conduct, management, analysis and reporting of clinical trials. Increased information accessibility and flow will allow the faster conduct of clinical trials with higher built-in quality. Ultimately, this will lead to higher degrees of safety and well-being of patients.
