Full details: UC IRVINE EXTENSION OFFERS CLEAN WATER PROGRAM REGULATIONS AND MANAGEMENT Course to Provide Overview of the Impact and Control of Water Pollution IRVINE, Calif. (July 30, 2008) – The University of California, Irvine Extension announces a course in the Certificate Program in Environmental Management titled, “Clean Water Program Regulations and Management.” The course will be offered on Mondays, October 6-December 8, 6:30-9:30pm at the UCI Learning Center in Orange. “Students taking this course will gain an in-depth understanding of the impact and control of water pollution from urban runoff and other human activities,” explains course instructor, Dr. Mo Lahsaie, a clean water coordinator with the city of Oceanside and previous environmental scientist in the Watershed Protection Branch of CAL-EPA Regional Water Quality Control Board (RWQCB) in San Diego “They will also gain insight into the evolving role of comprehensive watershed protection management which is an important part of keeping our water clean.” Participants in the course will learn how to describe federal, state, and local laws; discuss water quality issues; manage urban storm water runoff and pollution prevention; and implement urban runoff Best Management Practices applicable to residential, commercial, industrial and municipal activities. A field trip provides hands-on, practical experience utilizing BMPs. The course will address the following topics:· Review of permitting and monitoring requirements for construction, industrial, commercial, and residential activities;· Management of urban runoff from a facility; · Community and watershed perspectives; · Low Impact Development (LID), Hydro-modification Plan (HMP), and receiving water Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs)· The role of education and enforcement in the management of urban runoff pollution. Course instructor Dr. Lahsaie has over 12 years experience in directing investigations and remediation of contaminated sites, managing cases with underground storage tanks and release of petroleum solvents, pesticides, heavy metals and hazardous wastes.
