If you have been to Berkeley but never really taken the time to look about and see what is really on offer then now is your chance to enjoy a good walk, great food and a new side to Berkeley.

Berkeley is a lively marketplace with an atmosphere wonderfully conducive to the art of shopping. Here, shopping is not a passive, enclosed-mall experience - instead it's an interactive, outdoor-oriented activity where window-shopping and walking complement the excitement of discovery.

Route

Join Urban Diversion  as we explore the main shopping district of Berkley and see all the town has to offer. Following our walk through the shopping district and The University of Berkeley we will finish with a much deserved dinner in North Berkeley's Gourmet Ghetto.

Telegraph Avenue: To get the full effect of living in Berkeley You need to visit Telegraph Ave. This is a historic street where movements such as the Free Speech movement and the Black Panthers gained momentum. It is a center for culture, intellectual pursuit through its many independent book stores, and diversity. Telegraph also features world-famous music stores and vintage clothing stores. Some of the  city's best ethnic dining is available just a few blocks south of Sproul Plaza right on Telegraph.

North Berkeley's Gourmet Ghetto: With its bounty of sidewalk cafes, flower stands, fine food purveyors, boutiques, jewelers, bookstores, and galleries that emphasize unique, artisan-produced wares, Shattuck Avenue in North Berkeley has a European ambience. The area, popularly known as the "Gourmet Ghetto" is home to scores of epicurean delights, including Alice Waters' world renowned Chez Panisse, considered the birthplace of California cuisine, the Cheeseboard cheese shop and bakery, and the original Peet's Coffee and Tea in historic Walnut Square.
