“Convention?” a behind-the-scenes look at campaign trials
Denver - June, 2008 - As the Democratic National Convention draws near, the Avenue Theater in Denver is proud to present “Convention?” - a satirical look at the primary process and the road to the White House. It’s a behind-the-scenes glimpse into a fictional presidential nomination campaign, the party called “The Patriots”. It’s an unscripted look at what happens behind closed doors when candidates are fighting for their party’s top prize.
“Convention?”, produced by Chris Gallegos, features three candidates; Jim McPherson, Albert Engle and Sandy Brewer as they prepare for their weekly debates across the country. We follow each candidate and their support staffs, consisting of a campaign manager, spokesperson, and, in the case of Albert, a running mate.
The show plays every Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Avenue Theater in Denver, 417 E. 17th Avenue. Each week, the candidates and their staffs will be in a different American city battling for that state’s two delegates. For a complete history of the fictional Patriots Party see our primer, show information or to see a full listing of which cities will be represented each week, go to www.theconventionshow.com.
“Convention?” also offers the audience a chance to have their voice heard, just like in a real presidential campaign. During the debates audience members get to ask questions directly to the candidates, grill the candidates on their platforms, test their knowledge of politics, even have a chance to mingle with the candidates and their staffs and get to know them one on one. Then, when the show is over, they vote for who they think won the debate. Every week we will track the winners and how many delegates they earn. At the end of the run, the candidate with the most delegates wins the Patriots Party nomination!
“This show is a fun, interactive and unscripted look at our political process,” says Co-Director Meredith Winfield. “The audience gets to see what goes on behind closed doors, but they also get to see the relationships develop, alliances formed and broken and they can follow the race from now until the end of the run which coincides with the DNC in Denver.”
It’s an unscripted, interactive and hilarious experience for anyone who has always wondered how a presidential nominee is really chosen. Simply put, “Convention?” is the best show about a fake presidential campaign you’ll ever see! “Convention?” runs now through September 5, 2008.
