The LEED for Homes Rating System is new to LEED V3. The Homes accreditation exam enables green-building professionals to use the new AP+ designation. The exam is administered by the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI) on behalf of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), the Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit, which originated the LEED building standard. The Homes exam is being offered for the first time in the Summer of 2009.

What is LEED AP Homes?

LEED for Homes is a unique LEED rating system. Only people who pass the LEED AP+ for Homes exam can help their LEED for Homes projects gain one point toward certification. Always keep in mind that before passing any LEED AP+ exam, you must first pass the Green Associates exam, unless you are a current LEED AP under an old rating system.

Where do I take the exam? When do I take it?

Contact the GBCI (www.gbci.org) to make an appointment to take the exam. Appointment availability varies by location and time of year, so you should try to schedule your exam as early as possible. The Green Building Certification Institute hires Prometric to administer the LEED Green Associate exam because Prometric has testing facilities in over 170 locations. Odds are high that there is a testing center near you if you live in or near a city. The exam is computer-based and appointments are scheduled on a first come, first served basis. Register early to get your preferred date. You will take your test on a Prometric computer at one of these testing centers, while Prometric serves as proctor.
