Full details:
Since the Cathedral of St. John the Divine was officially reopened in its entirety to the public in November 2008, tourists from across the city and around the world have flocked to upper Manhattan to visit the world’s largest gothic cathedral. But what many visitors may not see as they stroll the 601-linear-feet of the Cathedral are the “Secrets of St. John the Divine,” which is the subject of a “Spotlight Tour” given three times a year – and will next take place on Sunday, August 2nd from 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, 1047 Amsterdam Avenue (at 112th Street), Manhattan.

Discover a hidden statue of Peter Stuyvesant, the first governor of the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam (before it was New York), hidden images inside a stained glass window with vivid depictions of the moral struggles of 1930s and other artifacts that most visitors overlook.

Led by Senior Cathedral Guide Tom Fedorek, the tour will include a discussion where people can ask about many of the urban legends and myths associated with the Cathedral.  Find out if the British Crown Jewels were really hidden from the Nazis inside the Cathedral during WWII and if there is a maze of tunnels beneath the Cathedral’s crypt.

Tickets to take a “secret” tour of the Cathedral are available for purchase for $10 per person ($8 for seniors and students).  Reservations are not required.  For more information, call (212) 932-7347.
